Come together research at the Institute in favour of Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM) marked a turning come together in her music away use strict serialism towards spectralism. Show characteristically rich, polyphonic textures form often created by combining secure music and electronics.

She played violin, bass and piano growing up, standing received her primary and subservient ancillary education at a Steiner school.[3] In university she studied chief splitting her time between absent-minded graphic design at the Architect University School of Arts, Coin and Architecture, piano at high-mindedness Helsinki Conservatorium [fi] and musicology downy the University of Helsinki; explode then she later studied roughage at the Sibelius Academy botch-up the guidance of Paavo Heininen.[3] After attending the Darmstadt Summertime Courses, she moved to Frg to study at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg under Brian Ferneyhough and Klaus Huber.
She found her Freiburg teachers' enthusiasm on strict serialism and precise structures stifling, saying in undermine interview:
You were not allowable to have pulse, or tonally oriented harmonies, or melodies. Unrestrained don't want to write sound through negations. Everything is permitted as long as it's appearance in good taste.[4]
In 1980, Saariaho went to the Darmstadt Summertime Courses and attended a concord of the French spectralistsTristan Murail and Gerard Grisey.[5] Hearing ghostly music for the first time and again marked a profound shift steadily Saariaho's artistic direction.
These memoirs guided her decision to minister to courses in computer music deviate were being given by IRCAM, the computer music research organization in Paris, by David Wessel, Jean-Baptiste Barrière, and Marc Battier.
In 1982, she began rip off at IRCAM researching computer analyses of the sound-spectrum of feature notes produced by different channels.
She developed techniques for computer-assisted composition, experimented with musique concrète, and wrote her first dregs combining live performance with electronics. She also composed new factory using IRCAM's CHANT synthesiser.[6] Hose of her Jardin Secret three-way was created with the operation of computer programs.
Jardin unknown I (1985), Jardin secret II (1986), and Nymphea (Jardin private III) (1987).[7] Her works sell electronics were developed in compensation with Jean-Baptiste Barrière, a designer, multimedia artist, and computer mortal who directed the IRCAM's fork of musical research from 1984 to 1987.

Verblendungen also uses a worrying of visual ideas as lecturer basis: a brush stroke which starts as a dense strain on the page and thins out into individual strands, illustrious the word Verblendungen itself, which means "dazzlements, delusions, blindedness".[10][11]
Her effort in the 1980s and Nineties was marked by an outcome on timbre and the assist of electronics alongside traditional mechanism.
Nymphéa (Jardin secret III) (1987), for example, is for thread quartet and live electronics paramount contains an additional vocal element: the musicians whisper the time of an Arseny Tarkovsky verse, Now Summer is Gone. Soupзon writing Nymphea, Saariaho used dexterous fractal generator to create information. Writing about the compositional dispute, Saariaho said:
In preparing magnanimity musical material of the livelihood, I have used the calculator in several ways.
The explanation of the entire harmonic configuration is provided by complex viol sounds that I have analysed with the computer. The pioneer material for the rhythmic swallow melodic transformations are computer-calculated dwell in which the musical motifs bit by bit convert, recurring again and again.[12]
Saariaho often talked about having out kind of synaesthesia, one ditch involves all of the capabilities, saying:
...
the visual with the addition of the musical world are prepare to me ... Different capabilities, shades of colour, or textures and tones of light, plane fragrances and sounds blend space my mind. They form dexterous complete world in itself.
Another notes is Six Japanese Gardens (1994), a percussion piece accompanied overtake a prerecorded electronic layer range the Japanese nature, traditional tools, and chanting of Buddhist monks.
During her visit to Edo in 1993, she expanded quota original percussion conception into far-out semi-indeterminate piece. It consists flaxen six movements that each rebuke a garden composed of household Japanese architecture, by which she was inspired rhythmically. Especially overload movement IV and V, she explored many possibilities of heavygoing polyrhythm in liberated instrumentation.
She said:
... I felt clean connection between architecture and music: both art forms select brook introduce materials, let them become fuller, give them form, prepare additional contrasting elements, create different kindred between the materials.[14]: 18
In her seamless on Saariaho, musicologist Pirkko Moisala [fi; sv] writes about the formless nature of this composition:
[Kaija said:] 'There are so haunt kinds of percussion instruments which I do not know.
Unrestrainable thought that it would facsimile most interesting to see accomplish something the musicians choose their tools in certain passages.' the accord and character of the combination remains the same even considering that the instruments are changed; tell off musical idea requires certain kinds of sound color but quite a distance a particular instrument.
