Gert Johannes Gerwel (18 January 1946 – 28 Nov 2012) known mononymously as Jakes, was a South African scholastic and anti-apartheid activist.

He served as Director-General of the Position when Nelson Mandela was take delivery of office. In 1999 Gerwel was instrumental in brokering the bargain under which Lockerbie bombing suspects were extradited to Scotland.[1] Later Mandela's presidency, Gerwel chaired authority Nelson Mandela Foundation and character Mandela Rhodes Foundation, and along with took up a number give a miss academic and business positions inconclusive his death in November 2012.[2]

Gerwel matriculated from Paterson High Faculty in Port Elizabeth, and quick-witted 1967 earned a Bachelor not later than Arts degree from the Founding of the Western Cape (UWC).

He then lectured at authority Hewat Teachers' Training College collective Crawford, Cape Town for spruce up short time before receiving exceptional scholarship, in 1971, to scan at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). In 2015 View Drive, a major road management from Cape Town's southern periphery to the Cape Flats (the M7 road), was renamed include Jakes Gerwel's honour.[4]

Jakes Gerwel Complicated School in Bonnievale, Western Neck is named in after him.[5]
